About Me

My name is Janice and I am a 4th generation Ventura County resident who spent the first 33 years of her life in California going to school, college and working.

In 1981 I left my home state and moved to Montana to fulfill my dream of having lots of dogs, cats, horses and kids.  While I achieved what I wanted to circumstances forced me leave.  In 1990 my children and I moved to Prosser, Washington and then in1994 I took up residence in Lincoln City, Oregon.  In 1996 I wound up being recruited for a position in the wonderful city and state of Fairbanks, Alaska.  It was a big change from Washington and Oregon but in many ways similar to Montana so I loved it.  I was sad to leave Alaska after 12 years but needed to return to California to be closer to my mother and help her in her declining years.  (After all she had always been there to take care of me so I felt I needed to return the favor.)

While laboratory healthcare has always been my profession, writing and traveling have been my passions that I discovered I had in common with my mother and her mother before her.  I have to give credit to my grandmother for creating my love of traveling.  When I was in Junior High School she took me to Guadalajara, Mexico for several weeks over Easter.  That trip gave me such positive feelings and experiences that it indoctrinated me to want to travel more as an adult.  I’ve gone to more normal destinations like Ireland, Scotland and England but I’ve also enjoyed a unique experience by 3 weeks in the UAE (but that’s another story).

So that is something about me.

I remember seeing pictures of your UAE trip and hearing tidbits…you need to tell that story someday…or at least write it down!

Since I went to live with Hazel for a few years, I suppose that makes me a 4th generation Ventura County resident, too. I was interested in reading this because I had been out of touch with you for so long, so it was interesting catching up. Thanks for posting this blog. It has been quite nice rediscovering Grandma through her own words.

Hello. Do you control the rights to the photographs on this site? Specifically the one of the US Embassy in Delhi. I am writing to you from a book publishing company and we are interested in using one of the images so I’m looking for the rights holder. Thanks!

Yes I am the person who controls those pictures. A few were postcards and other things but most were pictures she took. She kept them as slides.
